Born in America, to South American parents, Sofia Troncoso’s engaging performances and beautiful Soprano is rapidly gaining attention on both sides of the Atlantic and now in Australia. She recently debuted in Melbourne with Orchestra Victoria as Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Scalia/Ginsburg). Previous highlights include Papagena  (The Magic Flute) for Scottish Opera, Gianetta (Elixir of Love) Into Opera, Adele (Die Fledermaus) with Diva Opera. Having sung in concerts with the RSNO and Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, Sofia recently debuted to critical acclaim in concert with Camerata for Musica Viva in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. In July 2021 she will star as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro for Opera Queensland.


She began her study under the tutelage of Priscilla Bagley at the Dramatic Institute of Vocal Arts, Inc and is currently studying with Janis Kelly in London and consults with Scott Johnson in Glasgow. A 2018-2019 Emerging Artist for Scottish Opera, Sofia sang on the autumn Opera Highlights Tour, covered Professor Prentice (Anthropocene), sang Papagena and went on as cover Pamina (The Magic Flute) and was promptly invited back to sing Tytania (Midsummer Night's Dream) in the 2020 season. 

In 2018 Sofia's debut as Poppea (L'incoronazione di Poppea) was critically acclaimed at Longborough Opera Festival.  In 2016-2017 she was a Young Arist for Les Azuriales Opera where she sang Nanetta (Falstaff) and won the Karaviotis Prize and the Salter Prize.

During her time with the National Opera Studio (2016-2017) Sofia was feature in the roles of Susanna, Zerlina, Amina, Norina, Cendrillon, Frasquita, Sabina, and Irina during residencies at Opera North, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, and in a contemporary opera project with David Pountney. 

Upon leaving NOS in 2017 Sofia sang Frasquita (Carmen) with Ormond Opera, Vixen (Cunning Little Vixen) at Grimeborn Festival, Sister Genioveffa (Suor Angelica) with Lunchbreak Opera and covered Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare) for Bury Court in 2018. Highlights of 2016 included a tour with Scottish Opera (The Mikado), Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro) with Opera24 at the Grimeborn Festival.

In the summer of 2014  Sofia was hired as a Studio Artist for Central City Opera  where she was featured in opera scenes and main stage productions Le Nozze di Figaro (Bridesmaid), Dead Man Walking and The Sound of Music (Sister Ermaghard).

In 2015 she graduated with Distinction from Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Ryland Davies and James Baillieu where she was rewarded a place with the Josephine Baker Trust. Her talents were also recognized by the  Isabel Jay Foundation (2013 and 2014) and the Michael Head Prize (2014). At RAM she was featured in opera scenes and main-stage operas such as Cendrillon and Suor Angelica. Upon leaving RAM Sofia sang Selena in an adaptation of La Serva Padrona in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Zerlina (Don Giovanni) with Hampstead Garden Opera.

Studying under Sunny Joy Langton, Sofia completed a Bachelor of Music with Honors from Northwestern University (2008-2013) where she was awarded a full scholarship in recognition of her musical and academic abilities. There, she was consistently cast in the Northwestern Opera productions (Die Fledermaus, The Magic Flute, The Merry Widow, Street Scene, L’incoronazione di Poppea), The Marriage of Figaro (Cherubino). She was also a finalist in the prestigious Bel Canto Foundation Competition in Chicago, Il.


In 2010 and 2011, Sofia was selected for the Castleton Artist Training Seminar at Lorin Maazel's Castleton Music Festival where she participated in the recitals, concerts, opera scenes, and mainstage productions: Il Tabarro, La Boheme, Beggar's Opera, L'enfant et les sortilèges, Suor Angelica, Carmen and Porgy & Bess.

Although her passion is opera, Sofia is an accomplished recital and concert singer, singing major works such as Bach, Beethoven, Hadyn, Handel, Mozart, Mahler etc. In recital she has showcased music in an array of languages and styles, her 2017 highlight being Stop all the Clocks: a multimedia cabaret with Shadow Opera and in January 2020 she showcase songs by Kurt Weill alongside other wonderful artists in The Vile Cabaret.
